The 56 Dodge And The Cop

One of my favorite vehicles, was my 65 Lincoln Continental convertible. When I agreed to teach my girl friend to drive, I didn't realize it was my Lincoln that would be the test car of choice. I was very fond of my girl friend, and discretion being the better part of valor; I purchased an old 56 dodge. Mechanically it was sound. Aesthetically, it left too much to be desired. Fading paint, rust holes, scratches, dents, and missing chrome doesn't come close to an explanation.

Not a ritual, but frequently, we would pack her children into the car and visit her sister and family. Planning to use the Dodge and practice her driving was scratched at the last minute. Instead, I drove. She didn't feel ready for lessons with the children in the car.  After our visit, I drove back. The dodge drove very well.

Her sister lived on a road perpendicular to a small highway. When I reached the highway, I slowed. Seeing no traffic, I pulled out on the highway. Seconds later I saw flashing lights followed by the whoop, whoop of a siren. I pulled to the road edge. After receiving a long sermon, I was allowed to go on our way. No ticket. Snickers from the passenger side and back seat were plentiful, however.

The following week we went to her sisters again. This time I came to a complete stop before entering the highway. Again, I saw the flashing light and heard the whoop, whoop. Where did he come from? What did I do?  I pulled over. It was the same officer. My top was down and he said Hi to the children and my girl friend. He then told me, "If you were driving this Lincoln Continental last week, you would have gotten a ticket. He then smiled and walked back to his car.
