The Fishing Contest

A TV station was sponsoring a fishing contest. I do not remember whether it was the first such one they had sponsored, but first prize was a 22” boat. At that time there was no entry fee. I decided to enter. Entry was at Henderson Harbor and we could go and enter early by car, or any time before fishing, by boat. We decided to enter when we arrived.

The morning of the contest we had a late start. By the time we were near Drowned Island. It was calm, warm, and beautiful. We were marking fish on my Ray Jeff like crazy. We still would have to go on to Henderson, dock, find out where to register, do so, and return or go somewhere else to fish. We decided to troll to Henderson. When we got close we would go in and register. We started catching fish. My wife and I had our limit in large brown trout before we reached Henderson. We did not have a live well so we placed them in our cooler from the sun and returned to Sandy Pond.

It had been a great day for fishing. When hearing the results of the contest, we found that, had we entered the contest, three of the browns we caught were larger than the first place brown trout.

Disappointed? No. If we had registered before fishing we would not have caught those fish. "A fish in the cooler is worth two in the lake."
