STORY PAGE GEORGE If you were one of those friends who often visited my youngest daughter at our
home, you will know who George is. Numerous other friends, visitors, or those just those lucky enough to be near our bathroom at the right time, have heard
his high-pitched child like voice behind that closed door. It started one day while I was in the bathroom. A high-pitched sound (possibly me singing an early 50’s song) escaped
the privacy of that room. Not wishing to admit that sound was coming from my person, I immediately told my young daughter and her friend that it was George. One thing led to another and soon I was talking to George with the high-pitched
voice. When they found out that George was a little man about three inches tall this story almost died. However when they found out that George was naked and
lived in our toilet, the news spread. Of course George was shy and could only be seen by me while the door was
closed. That did not stop many of my daughter’s friends from coming to listen to George. Many questions were asked as to where he came from, why he picked
our toilet, and where he went when I left the bathroom. It was also asked how he managed to travel and stay in clean water, how he
could breath, where he slept, and did he get cold. Try answering why he didn’t wear clothes, where did he get food, and what did
he eat. Did he have family, was his skin wrinkly, if he was lonely, did he have to brush his teeth, did he have to take baths, could he leave the water, or
why did he choose to visit me? One adult even asked if he had a girlfriend and a few other more personal
questions that I will not place on a family website. Once George became an item he almost always started a conversation as I started
to shave each morning. Often a high-pitched “Good morning Mr. Carr” was his opening phrase. He almost never visited unless someone was outside that door.
The length of his visit was often determined by who was there, and what questions they asked. The more visitors we received, the more George appeared. Peace and quiet for me
in the bathroom became a thing of the past. Can you imagine praying for your daughter’s friends to go home so you could use the facilities? Don’t laugh. All of the visitors were not little children either. Soon many adults were
asking to listen to George. One time at a school function I was addressed as George’s friend. When people looked at me with that funny look, I knew that they were aware of
George…………………………… My daughter has left our nest, her friends may only visit once a year, and
George’s voice is hardly heard these days. Yesterday one of my other daughters and I were talking on the phone. The subject was an upcoming family reunion.
Out of the blue, she asked why there was no story about George on my website………………………. NOW THERE IS. Who knows, with four grandchildren here a few days from now, I wouldn’t be
surprised if George didn’t visit us at camp. A “Good morning Mr. Carr” may soon be heard here. My memory is failing, but I think George can answer any
of the old questions, and maybe a few new ones. I personally wonder how he will travel all he way from Massena to Sandy Pond?
